The purpose of this wiki is to provide a location for discussion about what E-Government services are and how this subcommittee can make a difference in the library community. The wiki is open to any member of ALA that has an interest in this subject.
With that in mind, please take the time to look over the information that is provided and please feel free to add any information that you feel would benefit the discussion. By clicking the Discussion tab at the top of this page, you will be led to the section of the Wiki where people may connect through discussion. We have also provided a space for you to share your personal E-Government Services experiences.

Welcome to the E-Government Services Wiki
Preliminary Charge to COL Adhoc Subcommittee on E-Government Services:
To develop policy recommendations, legislative proposals and other strategies for the ALA Committee on Legislation related to the role of libraries and the delivery of E-Government services to the American public. The subcommittee shall seek involvement from the broadest range of interested units within ALA and promote collaboration to determine and meet the needs for policy, training, research, legislation and other activities related to libraries and E-Government services.

In order to participate in this wiki, you need to create a user account. We suggest using your last name and first initial for this. A wiki is a group of related web pages; a forum to share ideas and record consensus. Editing is easy; click Edit on the menu on any page and edit the plain text using the tool bar. Every page change is recorded so you can see the history of pages.

Meeting at Annual 2009
This meeting will begin after the Joint COL / Legislation Assembly meeting ends. The E-Government Services subcommittee is asked to attend the COL / Legislation Assembly meeting starting at 3:30 p.m. in McCormick Place West room W195 to speak about the toolkit and answer any questions that might be raised.
Meeting at Midwinter 2009
We will have a meeting on Sunday from 1:30-3:30pm in the Marriott's Colorado BR E.
Agenda:
- Summarize the Deliberative Dialogue that took place during Annual conference and continue the discussion
- Work on the web-based toolkit - Hear from the working group about the Table of Contents that they will have created.
- Update on legislative activities
- Work on any resolutions that are created at the conference
Please bring your own copy of the Toolkit draftto the meeting as we are "going green" this conference and I will not be able to provide each of you with a copy.

E-Government Service & Veteran's Information
The American Library Association (ALA) spearheaded a series of activities during the week of Veteran's Day, November 11, 2008 at libraries across the country to make information available to help veterans and their families better understand the education benefits available under the new Post 9/11 GI Bill.
ALA's Office of Government Relations (OGR) is working with a group of four national organizations in this effort, including the American Legion National Headquarters, the American Council on Education, the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools, and the National Military Family Association.
A wiki has been created to be a tool to locate various types of veteran information, but by no means is the information located [www.wo.ala.org/veteransinfo here] the only applicable information. While there are many veterans’ groups that are providing information to veterans, the only official material is created by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (V.A.).
Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits will go into effect in August of 2009. As the V.A. releases new information regarding the Post 9/11 GI Bill it will be added to this site. Please check back for updates!

WO Issue Brief
The Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study gathers a wide range of data related to computer and Internet access in U.S. public libraries – including the number of computers, barriers to high-speed Internet access, Internet services and trainings available, and funding for technology.
The Study research team is developing and publishing topical briefs related to issues affecting communities’ access to technology in our public libraries. These documents are not intended to be comprehensive but rather to share key findings from the largest and longest-running study of Internet connectivity in libraries. At least two issues briefs will be published online every year.
Library staff are encouraged to use these briefing papers as educational tools with community stakeholders, including elected officials, funders and program partners, as needed to raise awareness of the specific – and sometimes unique – concerns of libraries around technology deployment. Staff may also use this format as a template for providing local data and examples related to a given topic. U.S. Public Libraries and E-Government Services

Applying "Customer Strategy" for Second Generation eGovernment Services According to a recent Deloitte Research Study, E-government has automated business, but it has not fundamentally changed the way business is done. The result is a growing gap between what citizens expect from government and what they believe they are actually getting. "In the rush to move customers from in line to online, public managers did not stop to answer the basic questions that need to be answered to service customers effectively and efficiently: Who are my customers? And what do they want?"
